FRANS W. SARISOpis
On the Meaning of ScienceAddresses the question: why science. This title argues that in our postmodern times we have lost the meaning of science and puts science in an evolutionary perspective: science is not in the interest of intellectual or commercial competition, not for creating wealth, not for fun, it is essential for our survival and the survival of life itself. In contrast to physicists, biologists already have a theory of everything. This is one of the underlying messages that physicist and author Frans Saris expresses in a play where Darwin meets Spinoza, Spinoza talks with Niko Tinbergen, who in turn meets Francis Bacon; Bacon is in discussion with Kamerlingh Onnes, when he notices Franz Kafka, who in turn closes the circle with Albert Einstein. This witty and searching play explores one of the many dimensions through which Frans Saris addresses the question: why science? He argues that in our postmodern times we have lost the meaning of science and puts science in an evolutionary perspective: science is not in the interest of intellectual or commercial competition, not for creating wealth, not even for fun. It is essential for our survival, the survival of humans, and the survival of life itself.
