In 1955, at the end of the Allied occupation of Austria, Max Haffner, burdened with guilt, puts together a risky photo exhibition using the work of his long-time friend and confidante, Greta Anckermann, in the hopes that she might emerge from exile and return to Vienna. His eight-year-old daughter, Patrizia, takes in the glossy prints and listens to her father describe Greta, and her Leica camera, in mythical terms, becoming enchanted with her legend.

Thirteen years later, in 1968, novice journalist Patrizia seeks Greta out in Geneva, convincing her to tell her story in her own words. She hopes to reinvent Greta, remind the Viennese public that she existed; Greta hopes to expel some of her demons. As the incredible story unfolds in their interviews, Patrizia hears shocking truths about Greta’s entanglement with the Third Reich, and about her father’s entanglement with Greta.

Patrizia vows to get the full story out of Greta, but the truth may be more convoluted than she imagines.
