JOHN POLIDORIOpis
One of the foundational works of vampire fiction, John Polidori’s The Vampyre helped introduce the vampire to British popular culture and transformed the creature of folklore into the mysterious, charismatic aristocrat that would influence generations of gothic literature. This edition pairs Polidori’s landmark story with thirteen other early tales of the macabre.
First published in 1819, The Vampyre emerged from the same famous ghost-story gathering that inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Moving between Italy, Greece and London, Polidori’s tale introduced English readers to a new kind of vampire – sophisticated, alluring and deeply dangerous.
Its influence reached far beyond the original story, helping establish many of the characteristics that would later become central to vampire fiction and paving the way for the gothic tradition that eventually produced works such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Alongside Polidori’s story, this collection features thirteen macabre tales originally published in leading London and Dublin magazines between 1819 and 1838. The selection includes works by Edward Bulwer, Letitia Landon, William Carleton and James Hogg, exploring supernatural doubles, gothic mysteries, death, fear and the darker anxieties of nineteenth-century society.
A fascinating journey into the origins of vampire and horror fiction, The Vampyre and Other Tales of the Macabre is an essential collection for readers of gothic classics, bringing together Polidori’s hugely influential vampire story with some of the most intriguing dark fiction of the early nineteenth century.
